Capital One should join the circus. It has more tricks up its sleeve than any magician we know of. Its favorite is the low-limit credit card that, through sleight of hand, goes almost immediately into the over-limit category, piling up charges, fees and penalties faster than you can say abracadabra.
Besides the rap sheet to the right, there are these little annoyances ...
M. of Morrow GA (09/18/07)Repeated arbitrary holding of payments; customer service reps are not helpful AT ALL but seem to read from a script; have successfully had held payments released by CSRs only to be told at later dates that that is not their policy and that no one did that (or if they did they weren't supposed to); wait times are absurd and after holding for 15 minutes I am frequently transferred to several different departments, often times the incorrect department; CSRs refusal to work with the customer--by far the worse customer service experience I have ever encountered.
Alvin of Arlington TX (09/18/07)Capital One will not allow me to close my account and continue to bully me by continually adding fees to my CLOSED card. I was able to obtain a balance transfer and the credit union I used called to obtain final payoff plus fees. Capital One provided the pay off.
I took my payment to a Capital One branch so that my payment would post without additional fees. To my surprise they charged fees for credit card protect which had been canceled - but they never canceled, late fees which were paid in the pay off and an over limit fee when the invoice had been paid before the penalty had been assesed. I wrote a letter protesting these charges and by their own rules indicated in the invoice I received they said theey would not charge fee while under investigation.
Miriam of Beverly Hills, CA (09/14/07)Ever since the beginning of 2006, I have been trying to cancel my Capital One credit card due to their indiscrepancies, fraudulent charges, high penalties on purchases not authorized by me. I am outraged that I have tried to cancel this credit card over seven times, and the company continues to send me bills on a card I have not even had in my possession for two years!!!
Nicholas of Coconut Creek, FL (09/12/07)I have a Capital One credit card that I have been trying to close. I thought it was closed six months ago, then I get a statement in the mail. The account has a $5 a month fee that I do not want to pay. They keep applying the fee and that keep the account open.I am so sick of Capital One that I closed two other accounts with them.
Ruth of Palmdale, CA (09/12/07)I applied for a credit card and never heard anything back. A month later, I received a bill for $38.00, $19.00 for a membership fee and $19.00 for a late fee. I called and spoke with a rep who had a thick accent. I advised him that I never received an initial bill, nor received a credit card. I advised I will pay the $19.00, but will not pay the late fee. He stated that it would be waived. Two weeks later, I received the card. I called customer service to pay the $19.00 and to verify that the late fee has been credited. They said no, and in order for them not to report me as 15 days past due to the credit bureau, I needed to pay $30.00. I did that and asked them to close the account as I have never used the card and found it hard to believe that I had to pay. They said they couldn't close it as there will be more charges. I have other credit cards with no membership fees and with very high limits and I have had not problems. I think Capital One is a predatory company and should be fined stiffly for their practices.
Debra of Byron, MN (09/11/07)When I called to question the payee of a transaction on my monthly statement, I was offered cash, interest-free for 18 months, at a cost of 2% of the cash amount. When I questioned if there were any hidden costs or consequences, I was told there were none. However, on my next monthly statement, there was the charge for the total loan amount and the 2% charge. When I called to ask why this wasn't on a separate statement, I was told that from now on, any payment I make on my account, 90% of my payment will go towards the loan amount, and only 10% to my purchases. That leaves me paying monthly finance charges on my purchases, which ends up costing me more than if I never accepted the loan. This deal leaves me paying 16% on my account balance. Which I could have paid down if I hadn't taken out the loan through them. I never received anything in writing, it was all verbal over the phone.
Michael of Warsaw MO (09/05/07)When I was contacted with an offer to use a Capital One credit card, they told me at that time that the intrest rate would be 9.90. This would be fixed for the life of the card, now i`m being told that my rate is going up and the only thing I can do is pay the higher rate or opt. out. I feel that they should stick to their agreement and leave the terms as they contracted to do!
Dean of Ballston Lake NY (09/05/07)First of all, thank you for the information provided out here it was very helpful when I had to contact Capital One for the same issue that everyone else has been reporting.
I was a longstanding customer with Capital One with a fixed 9.9% apr, but received notification that the rate was going up to 15.9% variable. I have called and decline the terms, but I wanted to share with you all my experience in trying to reach a person at Capital One.
Normally if you hit 0 on your phone you would be transferred to customer service. I hit 0 and was asked to make another selection, I hit it again and got the same message. I hit it a third time and was finally transferred to customer service. I did speak with an actual person and my request to decline the change in terms was put into effect. I will have to wait and see, but that was my experience in getting this far.
Catherine of Bossier City LA (09/05/07)I have had a credit card through Capital One since 1998 that was supposedly 9.9% for life. I have never paid late, never been overlimit and rarely carry a balance over 6 months. I received a notice in August, 2007 that they were changing the terms of my card and raising my rate to prime + 7.65%.
I called customer service and was told the change was for economic reasons. I asked them to send me a copy of my original contract but what they sent me was what they referred to as my original offer. It doesn't have the words For Life anywhere on it. I truly believe the card I applied for said 9.9% For Life.
William of Kirksville MO (09/05/07)I originally had a fixed rate for LIFE of 8.9%. In March I received a notice that my rate was increasing to 13.9%. I have been given excuses that the Feds increased interest rates or that this is simply a business decision. My complaint that a fixed rate was not the same as a variable rate and could not be changed fell on deaf ears.
I have recorded several conversations with their account specialists and was told that I did not have authorization to record the call even tho Capital Ones' automated system plainly tells you that this call may be recorded for quality control purposed. What can I do?
I finally got the name and fax number of Capital Ones' CEO of Richard Fairbanks as I was told that there was no one in more authority than the office in Virginia that I could speak to. This same thing happened several years ago and after much ado I was finally transferred to an office in NYC where the rate was immediately restored to its original level. I have excellent credit and a limit of 25k but only have < class="kLink" oncontextmenu="return false;" id="KonaLink2" onmouseover="adlinkMouseOver(event,this,2);" style="position: static; text-decoration: underline ! important;" onclick="adlinkMouseClick(event,this,2);" onmouseout="adlinkMouseOut(event,this,2);" href="http://www.consumeraffairs.com/credit_cards/capital_one.htm#" target="_top">My FICO score is +750 though, I have excellent credit. I even paid off my truck loan early which was taken out with People First who was bought out by Capital One before I paid off my loan. I made approximately 1 years worth of payments to Capital One for the truck, then paid off the balance 2 years early.
I just received a notice that my 9.99% for Life Capital One Card interest rate is being jacked up to 14.99%. When I called to ask why, I was told it was a business decision.
I promptly called the opt out of terms number on the notice. About one week has passed and I called them to make sure they got my opt out information on my card. Guess what! No record of that on my account. I was put on a conference call with the CSR and she dialed the opt out number while staying on the line with me. The opt out number said it had already received the information. The Live CSR had no record of it on the account.
If you're opting out of their new terms make sure you follow up with them until a LIVE person tells you it is on record. I will be transferring my Capital One balance elsewhere within the next month!!! This is gouging for dollars! Good customers are being sacrificed, while new customers are being offered lower rates.
Pat of Forest City NC (08/04/07)From the Capital One Complaints on your site, I see we are not alone. Capital One recently sent us the notice too, that it was raising our APR due to rising interest rates. This raised a red flag. We've had a Platinum account with them at a FIXED rate of 9.5% for many years, never been late, etc.
The second flag went up today, when we received brand new cards in the mail from Capital One. A letter accompanying the new cards explains, As a result of a data compromise at a merchant where you have used your Capital One credit card, we believe your account may be at risk for unauthorized use and so are sending you a new card. The letter encourages us to activate our new cards today. This seemed very strange, since our account number has not been changed, and I suspect that activation of these new cards will serve to accomplish something other than fraud protection that is known only to Capital One.
What's going on and how can we find out? Are they allowed to change an APR that was supposed to be fixed? And they didn't even disclose to us what the new rate would actually be. Also, by activating the new cards, are they changing everything else about our account and its terms, so that we're entering into some new arrangement of theirs without knowing anything about it?
Christine of Boynton Beach FL (08/04/07)I have been a Loyal Capital One customer since 01/2001 and NEVER made one payment late - NOT ONE LATE FEE! With a measly $7500 credit limit now, originally $5k, a current 9.9% interest rate, I too received a notice (08/2007) that my rate was going up to 15.9 %. Although I recently paid off this card and would like to keep it open, I have now chosen to close/cancel this account with them.
With a credit score of 740, and being able to purchase a home with no money down, interest only, this interest increase is a slap in the face to those who manage their money very well....more like Excellently if that were a word. And to think, I was just thinking about canceling one of my 3 credit cards and now the decision has been made for me. I'll stick with my Chase credit card at 9.99% fixed, credit limit of $30k and BOA (bank of america) at 7.50% fixed, credit limit of $23k for all my credit card transaction or should I say, my emergency situations.
Yes, the rep that I talked to at C.O. said it was a business decision. I told her..hmmm, you guys must have been bought out by someone and/or alot of you guys are going to be losing your jobs because guess what...I'm canceling too.
Galen of Mcminnville OR (08/03/07)Similar to other recent complaints, I have had a Capital One credit card for over 5 years that was supposed to be fixed at 9.9% FOR LIFE. Now they tell me they are changing it to 15.49% vairable. Did I die or something? I have never been late, always paid well above the minimum every month and considered them a reputable company.
What's in my wallet? Certianly not Capital One from now on. I just pulled my $15K balance and put it in B of A at 2.99% for the next few months. I had always resisted surfing my credit cards until this came up. I feel that Capital One has broken their original contract with me and this is tantamount to bait and switch.
Melissa of Dalton GA (08/03/07)On Tuesday 7/31/07, my husband received a notice that his interest rate was being chaged to 15.9% from the fixed rate of 9.9%, which was supposed to be the rate if his account was kept in good standing. Which it has until Capital One started making up their own rules. When I called, they said that it was a decision within the company. This was a poor excuse. I spoke to a guy that could hardly speak English, and he sounded like he had memorized his speech. None of this made any sense.
O.K., if this was not upsetting enough. I went online to make my August 28th payment, and found that a late charge had been put on, my account of $39.00. I went balistic!! I again called customer unservice, and I demanded to know why this late payment was put on my accout. She said the payment I made on 7/5 was late for June. O.K. June's payment was made on 6/8. My payments have been made early, and they have never started putting a late payment on the account, because it did not fall in their billing period!!
This is just another unethical banking standard that they have started. I asked to speak to a supervisor, but she would not let me speak to one. In mine and my husband's 30 or more years of having credit, we have never been late, instead always early on paying our bills. This is more than upsetting.I am going to have a late payment showing on my account, which was in fact an early payment. This will show up on my credit. This whole week has been most upsetting with all the tactics that Capital One had put us through. We are being penalized for keeping our accounts is good standing is what this amounts to.
Michaelof Elk Grove CA (08/03/07)An account in good standing and they can do this!? Capital One does not want your business, they want only to pillage and plunder. In what realm do they justify an increase to 15.9% interest? From 4.9% introductory to 5.9% to 15.9%! A business decision based on what? Clearly not wanting my business, only my earned money.
Capital One has done nothing for me to earn 15.9% interest on my balance. I prefer to do business with intelligent companies and will close my account as soon as the 'rewards' are posted to my balance. I've been given until September 11th (significant?) to do the right thing and not accept their terms.
On September 16th, I lose any unused rewards. Can they do that to an earned benefit? Do they really own those points and having them on my statements was really a fake-out? Capital One, and any company associated with Capital One, has lost my business for life. And I just got an offer from their on-line bank. As if I would choose to. I'll go to e-trade first. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.
Is this not modern bait and switch? Is it not predatory? Hook, line, and sinker. Complain to your representatives about getting these unfair practices stopped.
Close your account and choose to partner with a credit business. Cut up your cards and use them no more. They are not worth the plastic they're made from. When those new offers for lower interest rates come in from Capital One, send them back with blank sheets so they are burdened with the postage. Maybe the 15.9% is needed to pay for 'no-hassle' marketing - what a joke!
The 5.9% offers and the 9.9% on the web site are too good for customers. Those deals are offered as bait for the next round of suckers. Forced to use points in a manner inconsistent with my wishes. The reward site is no longer accessible. Are they overextended and unable to manage?
Susan of Santa Paula, CA (07/31/07)I have had a Capital One credit card since 2004 with a 5.9% fixed rate. I received a notice yesterday that they were going to raise my interest rate to 15.9% with a variable APR with no provocation! I have never been late, never gone over the limit, and have always paid well over the minimum amount due.
I called and they said, "It was just a business decision. Don't take it personally". How do you you NOT take it personally when it is your account and your credit score?!The options I have are to close the account and pay off the balance, or agree to the new terms. Neither is acceptable to me.
Richard Pfeffer of Live Oak FL (07/31/07)I have had a FIXED for Live Credit card for 10 years, Now for no reason they are changing my rates to a Variable rate. How can they get away doing this when my credit has not changed, I have not been late. When I call them they said that it was not realy for life. They can change it any time they want. I can opt out of the credit card and they will only change me the currnt rate until I pay it off. This will force me to change to another credit card. I feel they should not be able to do this..
Gary of Grafton WI (07/31/07)I have had a Capital One credit card for about four or five months now. I was specifically told that it was a fixed rate. I specificaly asked them what would happen if I was a few day late on my payment. They told me that my rate would not change and I would have to only pay a late fee. I have paid well over my minimum every time (one or two which may have been a day or to late(I pay online)). No worries right? Just pay the late fee.
I have just received a pamphlet that states important notice change in terms. This state nothing about late payments or anything, which of course it should not because they don't matter, right? This pamphlet looks like it has been made to be sent out to thousands, if not more, people.
It states, in light of rising interest rates over the past few years and the rate currently applied to your account balance, the APRs on your account are about to increase.Your new rate for purchases balances will be as folows: A variable rate that equals the Prime rate plus 7.65%, currently 15.9% ANNUAL PERCENTAGE RATE. Our current rate was 5.90%. What a crock. Are there any honest credit card companies that don't have high rates?I am currently looking for a new card. The pamphlet sates that you can choose to decline these changes and cancel you acount by calling their automated system a7 1-800-211-3315 by midnight EDT, September 11, 2007. It is time to find a new card and do the balance transfer thing at a low rate. I was once told that you should keep changing cards around once a year to keep a better rate.
Louise of Birchwood TN (07/31/07)Received a term/condition notice from Capital One yesterday. They informed me that they are raising my interest rate due to the economy and the current interest rate that I'm paying now. I have always paid on time and only used them when they had special rate offers. Is this fair?
Tim of Dyer, IN (07/31/07)I have a Capital One credit card that has a 9.9% fixed rate and now they are telling me they're raising my rates, even for existing balances. I have never made a late payment or done anything to warrant this.
When I spoke to a rep they told me the reason they were doing this is because they were just amending their terms and conditions. I don't see how they can do this when my interest rate is supposed to be fixed and am and always have been in good standing with them.
Timothy of Santa Barbara CA (07/10/07)
My credit card was denied 7/7/07. My wife had accidentally paid the bill online and chose an account that we had paid off. The payment was $1200 of which we still have not been able to get restitution for after 2 full weeks. Our credit is outstanding and have used Capital One over the years but have run into problems with them both not listening, not being able to offer assistance, and only speaking to my wife on the account if we send them a power of attorney because I am the primary and my wife is only a card holder, even though I have repeatedly asked them to talk with my wife over and over again.
Shannon of Bostic NC (07/02/07)My husband and I were buying a new home one year ago and discovered that there two charge offs from Capitol One. We have never had a Capitol One account. We decided to make a settlement just to resolve the issue. After making the settlement vis Western Union, we asked for a signed copy of the application showing the signature that requested or approved the credit card. They have not been able to produce an application. It now shows on our credit as Capitol One and Arbor House Collection. We are attempting to resolve this matter with no success, ony frustration.
John of Wallingford CT (07/02/07)I have been making payments through Capital One’s Attorney, [by Priority Mail and Money Order] have proof of delivery; just recently I have received a notice in the mail requesting my appearance in a Small Claims Court.
I can’t even contact Capital One to get this resolved – either they say their system is down or I go through VM-H**L!?!
Martin of Newport Beach CA (07/02/07)My grandmother received a Capital One Credit Offer with promise of Balance Transfer Rate of 1.99%. She applied for the preapproved credit offer and indicated she want so transfer a balance of $3000.00. She received 5 seperate Capital One Credit Card with $500.00 limit and another one with $600.00 limit. First 5 Capital One Credit Card had balance of $500.00 Each and last one of $575.00 including $75.00 Balance Transfer fee. She got the 1.99% interest rate on 6 credit cards.
Once she received all 6 cards, the due date was in 10 days. My grandmother contact me to help resolve the issue. First Customer Representaive told us this is what she qualified for and can't have a single credit card and phone called mysterious dropped off. I called the second and third time, customer service representative refused to talk to me since I not the card holder even my grandmother gave me permission several time. My grandmother is slow and hard of hearing.
The fourth customer service representative seems to take some sympathy and said, she take care of it and resolve it. Just make one payment of the 1st card. 2 weeks later, 5 of the 6 cards had late fees, and overlimit fees.
Cherie of Wells, NY (06/30/07)Capital One informed me by mail that if my APR, listed on my Feb. 2007 statement, had a letter code next to it my terms could change by April 2007. Even though my statement had no codes listed, I immediately wrote a letter to Capital One at the given address and refused any change in terms. I stopped charging to the account before the March 30th deadline. My April 2007 statement arrived with a rise in APR of 5 points!
When I contacted the customer service rep they "regret to inform me" that since I did not refuse the terms via computer electronically, I would be forced to accept the new terms. Even though they sent the notice by mail, the customer was required to send an electronic response, which could not be confirmed or proven as a written document could be.
I have written the company 4 times and never get any satisfaction.
Susan of Nashville, TN (06/30/07)My interest rate went from 5.99% to 28.99% then back down again to 5.99% now it is back up. I have never paid late and have always paid well over the minimum fee.
I know we signed a paper that says they can do whatever they want to us interest-wise, but this is getting ridiculous.
I am paying the darn thing off (if they will let me) and closing my account for good.
Katherine of Jacksonville Beach FL (06/28/07)
They declined my purchase while I was in the grocery store, I called and they said there were a bunch of online purchases so I said ok close this account and give me a new one. After numerous phone calls trying to get the paper work to say I didn't purchase anything, they told me 7-10 business days. I called and they told me no report was ever done. So then, they did a report and then sent it with only one fraud charge.
I paid off the card to close the account. I checked my statement and there was a fraudulent charge, after I closed it, so I called and of course, they were rude. they said at first that they didn't close it because there was still an investigation and then he back tracked and said the account had never been closed.
Linda of Cleveland ,OH (06/26/07)Had a credit account with a fixed APR of 4.99% and CapitalOne changed the APR to 9.90% even though all the paperwork indicated that this was a fixed rate. I have not missed or been late on a payment. I called and was told the Bank had gotten permission to change the terms of the credit agreement because they were loosing too much money and that my only recourse was to pay off the balance owed in full. This has doubles the cost of the finance charge over the remainder of the credit balance.
Joshua of Greensboro NC (06/20/07)
After paying my complete balance nearly, $3,000.00, I thought I would have a zero balance. However, Capital One accrued interest every day until they receive payment so I had a balance of more than $50.00 this month. When I asked what I would have to do to never owe them money again they replied it would be hard to say but they could try to estimate the amount I owed them at the time my payment posted. Of course that amount was $5.00 more than what I owe at this time today. I mean just tell me what I owe you for cryin' out loud.
David of Linden CA (06/20/07)
Account closed because interest rate jumped from 9.9% to 19.99%. Paid in full on 3-13-07 with zero balance. Acct not closed even though I called and contacted representatives several times with confirmation numbers. Contacted a senior acct manager who stated account was not closed yet and refused to close the account.
Stated that a credit was issued to my account which was an error in the amount of 119.70. They refused to mail it to me and said they will not close the account for another 30 to 45 days.
Phillip of Canton NC (06/20/07)
I called to combine two small credit cards. I was told a new balance, new payment date, and amount. I was told to tear up my card. I received a small note form them two weeks later stating It was declined after I was told by and associate it was not. I called Capital One spoke with Dorothy and she would not allow me to speak to a supervisor above her, I was told they did not have time to deal with me. I was on the call for 40 minutes. It has caused be to be late on both my accounts causing late fees to build up to the point I cannot pay now.
Elizabeth of Seattle WA (06/15/07)
I went to close my account today and the agent said she needed to read me some disclosure information. She read that if I did not redeem my points prior to closing I would lose all of them. I said please do not close my account at this time as I would like to redeem my well earned points. after I hung up and tried to redeem them, I found that they went ahead and closed my account so that I can't redeem them! I lost all of my points worth about $300.00.
Pam of Thatcher AZ (06/12/07)
Both my husband and me had Capital One credit cards; his for his corporation. It expired in Jan of 2007 and they never sent a replacement card. We called Capital One to ask for the replacement card and they sent one right away, however, it had the SAME expiration date, 1/2007 so it was already expired. We called several times and they promised to send out a new card, which we NEVER got.
In canceling it, we lost over 12,000 miles and they, of course, would not transfer those miles to my credit card. They did not tell him he would lose those miles either.
Garry of Sequim, WA (06/10/07)I am being harassed by Capital One. I have never had, nor will ever have, a credit card nor any loan with them. They call my cell phone several times a day, from different numbers and when I explain that they have the wrong person, they say they will take my number out of their system. The calls subside after a couple of days, then start up again a week later. This has gone on for months.
Francis of Casa Grande, AZ (06/10/07)Applied, on-line, for a Capital One Card with 0% balance transfer for 11 months. Capital One sent me e-mail approving the card and the 0% balance transfer of $4000 from another card. My first statement contained 0% interest charged. The next statement had a $35 interest charge. This started the usual round of phone calls that accomplished nothing until I asked for the supervisor, who said she would fix the problem. The next statement has an interest charge of $1.58. Hey, I'm making progress - right? The following statement had an interest charge of $25.65 on the 0% balance transfer! We finally paid off the balance transfer and closed the account by certified mail.
Joanna of Mims, FL (06/09/07)We had credit card for 4 years with 4.99% interest. Cap One recently raised the interest rate to 19.99%, which prompted us to pay off balance and close account. A supervisor added pending charges and interest to the payoff. Capital One received this payment 4 days before its due date, and still added interest. Thus, I received a new bill for $94.66 just for interest on the interest! By the time I am calling today, the balance has grown to $113 and multiplying each day.
Stephanee of Buffalo Grove IL (06/08/07)I recently noticed 8 charges to my credit card that I did not authorized. When I contacted Capital one I transferred into the fraud department, who then transferred me to the disputes department. I spoke with a woman who informed me that the charges were occurring from Capital One business partners and that the charges would gradually get worse. The charges would increase in domination and some would be as high as 129.99 a month!
I told her cancel my card immediately; at this time she informed me that this would not help. She said that these are set up as reoccurring charges that would reopen my closed account. She told me to contact you, Consumer Affairs, and Rip off Report.com.
I inquired, if Capital One knows this is happening why are they not stopping it and how does their so-called business partners have access to my credit card number and her response was they just do. She told me that I needed to dispute the charges with the actual companies before they can do anything, meanwhile my card would be open and subject to continuing charges. She gave me the addresses of the companies. I contacted one of the companies whose phone was answered in a foreign language, another companies wanted to look up my order by phone number, when I refused to give my number the operator said I can't help you then and hung up.
I contacted Capital One again and this time got through to the fraud department. They have supposedly closed my account and reissued a new card. Meanwhile I am receiving random packages in the mail from their affiliates. I would think this is a major privacy issue that this company is having. All you have to do is be a business affiliate and you can have anyone’s credit card number and mailing address and charge what ever you want until the customer notice the charges? What other information do they have about me now?
Gene of Dalton, GA (06/07/07)Guess what's NOT in my wallet anymosre? After enjoying a 12.9% apr for many years they suddenly without notice (no letter) raised it to 17.9%. All payments have been made and on a timely bases. If my math is correct, the is raising it 5 points, or about 39% over 12.9% As their ad depicts, they are Pirates.
Kathryn of Saint Louis, MO (06/04/07)I was offered a credit card from Cap One immediately after my 18th birthday. I accepted and made sure I made payments on time. Payments for 4 months were listed as being returned although my bank has no record of Cap One even attempting to post them to my account. I triple checked that the info was correct and still was getting returned check fees and late pay charges. I finally attempted to cancel the card after paying in full and was lectured and harassed about how canceling the card would ruin my credit. Now I am getting bills saying I owe them for Credit Inform, which I did not sign up for and protection services, which I did. They say my account has to have a 0 balance for 2 months to close it even though this is not in their TOS.
Eunice of Pleasant Hill, IA (06/04/07)I pay bills online. I tried to pay on the Capital One account several days before it was due. The service kept sending me to links that said "not available". After the date, I was charged a late fee of $29. I have tried several times to call them but cannot get to a person to talk to. Only automated responses on that line.As a result of late fee, they want to charge higher interest.
Oriwan of Brockton MA (06/03/07)
My bank was bought by another, account #'s changed. Old acct # on file at Capital One. Charged with late fees for 2 months with no notice at all. Then when I tried to use the telephone payment system, the CSR screwed that up and another payment did not go to the account. After making changes online, I was not allowed to make a payment for 24 hours.Who's in your wallet? Capital One, that's who.
Dean of Apex, NC (05/23/07)With an almost perfect credit rating, and paying off our Cap 1, in full, on time for several years, we missed one payment because for the first time, we disputed a charge (and won the dispute). We were told we would be issued another bill but instead were hit with finance charges and late fees.
We paid the bill and charges in full down to a zero balance. Yesterday in the mail, we get at $24 finance charge on the zero balance.
Carolin of Greenup, IL (05/22/07)I paid my account off in full almost 10 yrs ago and I am now getting a bill from a collection agency for 3 times the amount of my final bill. This has happened a few times before, about 6 or 7 yrs ago and I sent them a copy of my cancelled check then. This is on my credit report as an unpaid debt and goes against my credit.
Kenneth of Eatontown NJ (05/22/07)I had a low limit annual fee credit card with Capital One, when the anniversary was looming and the annual fee was due, I called to have the card canceled, paid it in full and put it through the shredder. Several months later, I was getting phone calls constantly from an 800 number on my cell phone, finally fed up with the constant calls I answered and it was Capital One trying to get a late payment. Instead of canceling the card they continued to accept charges to it from some web site subscription or other I had made, I am guessing.
I told them I had closed the account before and wanted it closed and for nothing else to be charged to an account. I asked how does an account that is closed accept charges? Getting nowhere, I again paid it in full and requested that the account be closed and no other charges be accepted to it. They said it would be done and I asked for a confirmation number or something to verify I had closed it, should they call again. They said they did not give out confirmation numbers.
I asked them to at least annotate in the call log that I had paid it in full and closed it out. They said they would. This was in November of 2006, I know, because I put it in the notes section of my electronic check book, 20NOV2006 in the amount of $21.45.
Fast forward to April 2007 and I start getting a a barrage of calls from an 800 number, which I answer, but there is nobody on the line. I finally answer and wait a while and someone comes on, I assume it is the delay to India, where most of their calls are answered. They say they would like me to make a payment. I told them I didn't think I was late on my payment as I always am worried about late payments, because I travel quite often, and I am afraid I will miss one. While he is on the line I checked my check book and saw that I had just made a payment. He said a payment had not been made in several months.
I asked him to double check, then he told me the number and I remebered the last 4, because that is how I distinguish between the accounts in my check book. Once he told me the number it came flooding back, that I had closed the account twice already. I then told him I wanted to talk to his supervisor because I wanted to talk with someone who had some sort of ability to be able to close the account permanently. In the transfer we were cut off. So I tried to call them at the phone number on the back of my other Capital One card only to dial into thier menu driven nightmare, which I was unable to penetrate with only the last 4 of the account in question.
I then tried to dial the 800 phone number using the account number for which I still had an open account, figuring I could wait it out to talk to a live person. I was unable to get past the menu to a real live person because there were no issues with it. This issue is still open, I have gotten email replies to call a specific phone number and to enter my card account number which I do not know, and therefore can not get through. I am concerned that this will affect my Credit Rating, which I have been trying, successfully to improve, not to mention the stress on my body.
Luis of Aiken SC (05/20/07)
On 5/20 I called Capital One to discuss the basis for the interest rate increase on my wifes credit card. The increase was from 9.2 to 13.9. The reason given is present conditions in the market and we had an opportunity to opt out in February 2007. I let them know that a normal thinking person would not have chosen to pay more if the they had been given the notification. When I checked my account I found that they had increased my account from 9.2 to 18.9.
Greg of Hesperia CA (05/19/07)I open an account in Jan 1997, went through downsizing and financial hardship. I called Capitol One explained my circumstances. Their representive told me to pay $688.31, and that he would waive the remaining: $900. I scrapped the money up (a major sacrifice) and paid them in June of 1998.
To my surprise I received a notice, dated 5/9/2007, saying that I owe $3000. This matter was resolved, and it never appeared on my credit report the last nine years. Now, Capitol One (through their representative - Portfolio Recover Associates) are threatening to place this on my credit report.
Amanda of Frederick MD (05/17/07)
I opened a Capital One credit card which was issued with an initial credit limit of $3000. I was sent a letter stating that making my first three payments on time would make me eligible for a $500 credit limit increase. I made my payments, and my April statement indicated that I had the $500 increase, bringing my limit to $3500. Less than a week later I attempted to use my card to purchase a bicycle, and the charge was denied. I was told that my credit limit had been erroneously set at $3000 initially, and that it should have been closer to $850. They had still approved me for the increase, but that left my credit limit at only $1377.
By then, I was carrying a balance of roughly $1500, and thus I was put over my limit. I was told that they couldn't fix it that night, but that a manager would call me within 48 hours. Once I got that call, the account manager told me about the initial credit limit mistake and that, as compensation for my inconvenience, they would withhold any over-the-limit fees for three months, to give me a chance to get the overage paid off. Then, I got my statement last night, and it showed new finance charges - taking my balance over $1600 - and the $189 over-the-limit I was expecting to pay had turned into a minimum payment due of $261.
Erin of Rochester Hills MI (05/16/07)
My credit card has a $200.00 limit which is all I need. However, due to fees and late payment recording, I was unable to pay and thus was charged over-limit fees. I have, many times paid $300 or more to try to control their charges, but to no avail. I have requested, in writing, many times for them to send me my annual statements, so I could see what I paid, what I was charged and the difference. I wrote that once I received these, I would call and settle the account. They have never responded to these requests and continue to call me five, six even eight times a day.My credit report is damage and I am under a considerable amount of stress because of their tactics and unwillingness to send me the information I have requested (annual statements).
Leigh of Columbia SC (05/16/07)I happened to notice on my most recent Capital One statement that they increased my interest rate 80%. Since I rarely use the card, pay it in full when I do, never run a balance, and have a credit score at 800, I rang them up to find out why they increased the rate and to get them to lower it. They said no, it's their new policy. However, they did acknowledge my excellent credit rating and history. Still it made no difference for the rate.
Aaron of Livermore CA (05/12/07)
Have held a Capital One credit card at a 4.9% fixed rate for approx.5 yrs. payments have always been on time. My credit score is 720. In April they raised my rate to 9.9%. I have contacted them and was told there was nothing they could do. I did not know they could raise a fixed rate.
Bruce of Fort Mitchell, KY (05/09/07)We have tried 3 times to cancel our cards. These folks make it almost impossible to do that.
We have spent hours on the phone being bounced from person to person and still don't know if they have finally cancelled them.
Patricia of Eldersburg, MD (05/09/07)I received my latest Capital One statement to find that my interest rate went from 7.9% to 12.9%. I have a balance of about $6K so my interest rate doubled.
I was told that I received a letter stating that I could opt out of the increase. I don't keep what comes in the envelope, so I don't know if it was in there or sent separately. I told them I would never have agreed to an increase on my interest rate.
I transferred my balance to another card.
Daniel of Kenner, LA (05/09/07)I received a Capital One credit card 11/06 with a $3,000 credit limit. In April I recieved an additional $500 for having an account in good standing. My average balance on the card is $0.00, and I have not paid any finance charges because I pay my balance in full.
I had an unexpected car repair of $450 that I charged to my account. I tried to add an additional $178 but my card was declined. Come to find out that Capital One had dropped my credit limit to $300, which left me $150 over my credit limit.
When I called, they kept telling me I needed to pay $150 over the phone before I could even explain my situation. Finally, a manager told me my initial credit limit was a mistake and credited my account $50 (wow big deal).
I cancelled the opportunity to refinance my car through capital one and will be closing my account due to this.
May of Rockville MD (05/08/07)
I called Capitol One in august of 2005 to cancel my account. I was told I could not cancel and that they would not accept me closing my account. All purchases were paid for at that time. One purchase for 24.95 came one month later, I paid immediately.Capitol one kept charging me interest and penalty each month and phoned me demanding payment. I told them they were not owed anything, the credit card was destroyed in august 2005 and nothing was owed them. Collection agencies have harassed me ever since. I am 76 years young!
David of Roanoke, VA (05/08/07)I signed up for a "No Hassle Reward Card" from Capital One. I was sent a new card with a limit of $3000 and a list of terms and conditions. Initially everything looked good so I called to activate the card.
However, I had to speak with a certain account specialist who I tried to reach for ten straight business day to no avail. She never returned a phone call nor answered her number. After two frustrating weeks I finally demanded to speak to a supervisor and the request was only granted after I asked them to cancel the card and asked to which governing body I should report my experience.
Several months went by, I used the card several times and I paid my bill every month. However, in April I was suprised when the sales associate ran my card for $1000 and it was denied. I found that my credit limit had been reduced from $3000 to just over $900.
I was told that their records showed that I had been given the larger limit by error, thus the reduction.
Stella of Sandia Park, NM (05/08/07)Have not received a bill this month, and it is due in three days. Capitol One says it will cost me ten dollars to pay on line.
I wish I could speak to a real person.
Ben of Omaha NE (05/08/07)I had my No Hassle card with a fixed 4.9APR since 2002. I never missed a payment and rarely was near my limit. Recently, I transferred money to this card based on the low, fixed APR. After noticing my APR was now 9.90, I wasted an email and 25 minutes on their phone trees/holds/disconnects. Finally, selection the option to cancel the card - would you believe I got to a live person instantly?
Long story long - they gave me the script about how they sent a letter (which I do not recall) to opt out and in the end there wasn't a damn thing they could do.
I gave them the option to keep my business - but I'm paying it off, my wife is closing her account, and I no longer entertain the thought of using their online savings account - which btw, is 5% - the same amount they seem to have increased every credit card holder. I now have a better understanding of their business model - offer great savings returns on the backs of their current credit holders - NEVER AGAIN.>
Kristen of Lincoln Park NJ (05/07/07)In December of 06 I applied for and was issued a Capital One Platinum card with a total credit line of 3,000. Since December, I have made every payment well in advance, sometimes 2-3 payments a billing cylce to ensure that a balance, never, or rarely carried over into the next billing cycle.
I never had a problem with Capitol One, but I did notice that although I'd make my payment online, well before 3:0pm on some business days, this payment would not be posted for 2-4 days later; much longer than the guaranteed Pay before 3:00 pm and your payment is posted that day to your account. I noticed that this could potentially cause problems for people that paid their bill online close to the date payments were due.
Here is THE BIG PROBLEM: In April of 06, I received notice that my credit line would be increased from 3,000 to 3500. About a week later, I went on line to pay a portion of my bill, and noticed that in the Recent Activities tab, my credit line was now only $1,167.00 and my available credit was 49.00. In disbelief, I checked My Statement and found that my credit line still read $3,500.
COnfused about these two conflicting amounts, I called Capital One. It took about 2 hours to finally track down a phone number that would actually allow me to speak to a human. Upon explaining my situation, being left on hold, and transfered around the company, I was told that this could be a system glitch, and a manager would contact me within 48 hours. Being that this was a Friday, and I was scheduled to leave for vacation in a week, I asked if someone could prioritize this request; I was told a manager would call me back Saturday. The weekend came and went without a phone call.
Monday morning, I called Capital One to get this 'system glitch' off of my account. I was told that millions of cards were issued during the month of Decemeber with incorrect credit limits-this was costing them billions of dollars and they had to correct the problem. I was told a letter was sent to me on APril 27th, and when I responded that that date was over a week ago, I was told that I could not claim I did not receive notice unless at least 10 days have passed. I was basically told that I could not speak to anyone else, a manager was the best they could do, and that was that. The 'manager' made it seem like Capital One was doing me a favor by not charging me over limit fees-that's a load if I ever heard one. I was scheduled to vacation in the Carribean for a week, and have since canceled my plans. I was depending on my credit card for the hotel bill. I am beyond angered, and feel quite helpless that I will never be able to do anything about this.
Barbara of Barnesville PA (05/07/07)On my May 2007 statement I noticed my interest rate almost doubled from 6.9% to 11.9%! I was told from customer service they had sent an opt out notice on my statement but I never saw it. I think this borders on fraud and I am livid after carrying a $6000 balance with them and paying on time for years. As soon as I am able I will be transferring my balance to a reputable company. I will never use CapitalOne again.
Laura of Largo FL (05/07/07)I was given a card with a limit of $3000.00 and it was increased by $500.00 several months ago. I pay the bill one to two times a month and try to keep the balance less than 50% of the limit based on how that effects the credit.
I logged into my account early last week and saw that they had lowered my credit to $907.00. When I called they told me the original amount they gave me was wrong. Well it put me above my limit, thru no fault of my own. I have been a good customer, never been late, etc. and all they could offer me was a $50.00 credit for my trouble.
Alvin of New Whiteland IN (05/04/07)On Feb of 2006 I joined a travel club for 3995.00. Capital one did call to make sure the transaction was authorized. On May 2006 and June 2006 the travel club put the charges on again. The travel club is being pursued by the Indiana Attorney Generals office.
My complaint against capital one is that on the May and June charges they did not call to make sure this was an authorized charge and when I connected them they had me talk to their legal department. The legal department ask for a letter explaining what happened. I sent the letter in the mail 2 times and faxed it about 6 times. First they told me that they didn't get it. Then they told me I didn't give enough information about the complaint. Then I was told I sent too much information. Now I have been told that my time has run out for their help.
The attorney general office has said we have 2 years to get this fixed. Capital One should have never accepted the May and June charges. Now I am paying on 8000.00 dollars plus interest that I should not have to but I don't want my credit messed up. I don't know who else to turn to for help getting these charges off my charge card.
Anthony of Homosassa FL (05/02/07)
Have had a Capital One Visa for several years now. I have perfect credit and was enjoying a fixed 6.99% on purchases on this card. I called and requested a second card for my daughter. I called to activate. The service specialist could not find the account and said she would have a supervisor get back to me within two days. Never received a call back, received a letter about a week later stating the account had a zero balance and had been closed at my request.
The bottom line is this: no account default on my part, they have closed the acct. in error and now they will not help me to fix they're mistake. They should be held accountable for the time and aggravation that have caused me to endure. Hours and hours on the phone, mental anguish, terrible customer service.
Jakov of Flushing NY (05/02/07)
This is a Capital One Bill amount due was $537.81 which includes interest and penalties. On March 19,2007 I called Capital One and I paid 337.00 in settlement. I have since received another statement asking for $211.50 including finance charge. This is very upsetting for me. I am a 78 year old man and cannot take this badgering. I spoke with them and it is like I never did.
Casey of Derr PA (04/30/07)I have a Capital One Visa account which was opened in January 2007, They started me at a $3000 limit, This month, I was awarded a $500 credit line increase for my good history. On April 27, 2007, they lowered my credit line to $1996. My balance is $2200, so Now I am $204 over my limit. I called to complain, and was told that nothing could be done. A mistake was made with my credit limit, and to 10,000 other card holders, and they fixed the mistake.
I never have defaulted on my account with them, or my MasterCard I have with them as well. I was told too bad...nothing will change. They never even notified me of the change. I was just told, Sorry...but we cant't change it back. So I get screwed. now, I'll get hit with over limit fees, through no fault of my own.
Debra of Menomonee Falls WI (04/28/07)
My credit card was stolen and used to make a lot of purchases all on one day. I reported these charges immediately. They finally removed the charges but then on April’s statement w/o notice the charges appeared back on my statement. I tried calling to see why and I was on hold for 1 hour then one week later I got a letter saying they had found no indication of fraud and charged it back to my account and this put it over the limit and so I was assessed a over the limit fee. Despite numerous calls to the fraud department I can never get through they always say the computers are down or I am on hold for over an hour and they never answer.I have had my interest rate increased as well as they charged an over the limit fee, and I have been declined credit because of this.
Michelle of Jacksonville, FL (04/24/07)I checked my account on 04/23 to see that my FIXED interest rate went from 7.9% to a whopping 12.9%. I was sure this was a mistake, only to find out when I called that it wasn't.They said that they had sent out letters in our statments giving us a chance to opt out - a letter which I never received. I told the lady that I only got online statements and she said a seperate letter was sent. I never received that letter and she all but called me a liar and just kept saying I probably threw it away.I just don't see how they can do this, that was a fixed rate!
Kurt of Austin TX (04/22/07)
Capital One sent an offer to transfer credit balances and enjoy a 6.99% rate FOREVER on the transferred balance. Six months later we noticed on our latest bill that the rate had gone to 11.99%. We called and were told that forever does not mean forever and that among the many inserts in a previous bill was one informing us we could opt out of this increase. This is a very sneaky.
Jacqui of Harrisville RI (04/19/07)My husband and I both have separate Capital One accounts, which boasts of REWARD POINTS that are redeemable for merchandise. At the end of last year, 2 catalogs were sent to us with our specific accumulated points noted in the inside flap of the catalog.
The catalogs were identical EXCEPT the redemption points required for merchandise were DIFFERENT -- making redeeming my points completely out of reach! He had more points, so the items in his catalog cost more points than the ones in mine. IS THIS LEGAL? I was infuriated and am in the process of closing all accounts.Deceitful marketing/selling practices! I specifically use the card for large purchases so that I can earn points - only to find the points are on a moving scale and I'll never have enough for as much as a toaster oven!
Deborah Payne of Richmond VA (04/19/07)I just received my statement online and noticed the finance charges were about double what they have normally been. I then scrolled to the bottom of the page and noticed they raised my rate from a 5.90% to a 10.90%. I immediately called Capital One to find out why they would do this since from the time I got this card (7+ years ago) the rate was fixed at a 5.90% and I have never missed a payment and have always paid more then my minimum.
I was told that they sent out a letter in February with my statement, which I never saw, that stated they were going to do this. I told the customer service rep. that they could close my account then because I wasn't about to pay that rate when I did nothing to deserve it.
She proceeded to tell me that they were basing this on the prime rate but she could lower it to an 8.90%. Since I have another card with another company that is still at a 5.90% rate that I preferred the account to be closed. It really bothers me since I held this company in high regard and never thought they would do something like this.
Mary of Berrien Springs, MI (04/18/07)I had an account with Capital One for several years and thought the company was okay. I was very, very wrong!!!After being diagnosed with cancer, I put my home up for sale and made arrangements with Capital One to settle on my account when my home sold. I paid the agreed amount and received (at my request ) at letter saying I owed Capital One nothing, that my account was settled and closed. Boy was I wrong!! Capital One sold my write off amount to several companies! At one time I had 4 separate collection agencies trying to collect this amount. So after selling my home, fighting cancer, and paying my bills in 2003, I'm still fighting in 2007!!!!
Sean of Ramona CA (04/15/07)
I applied for a capital one credit card after receiving a letter in the mail. My first statement showed that I owed $12.09 and I had never even used this card. I called them and canceled my card and was told that I had to make that payment and then they would cancel my card. The next statement showed my previous payment of $12.09 but also showed new charges of $6.04. I sent that statement back stating that I had paid the previous balance of $12.09 as requested and that the card had been canceled.
Next I received a letter that stated in order to process my request they needed some more information. Information they already had on file. Information they had to have in order to give me that card. So I filled out their form which asked me my full name, SS#, mailing address, date of birth and account #.
Now the third statement has arrived and now I owe $41.94. Creditinform $5.99 not sure what this is. Past due fee $29.00 Payment protection $.0.41 all this on a card I have never charged on and canceled with their customer service department. I would like some help to stop this. If I can't cancel my charge card without a zero balance and they keep charging fees to my account then this will never end and it may hurt my credit. They leave you know way out.
D W of Zephyrhills FL (04/11/07)CAPITOL ONE BANK applied charges i never incurred and refused to correct the dispute rather brings suit for several times the amount owed in violation of federal consumer laws
The court says they always win and sides with them which will leave me with a judgement of $7,000 on my property.
Carol of San Francisco, CA (04/10/07)My interest rate went up from 12.9 to 17.9 in one month. They cite the reason that they sent me an opt out letter and I could pay off my credit card and not have credit with their company. They stated that because they wrote me a letter disclosing the rising costs of providing credit, that they are entitled to change the rates as they wish. I said that I had been a customer for a long time. My credit of course is not great because of an issue in the past. I therefore cannot just get another card.
These people prey on the poor or those with bad credit that has not had the time to be prepared. I asked what they could do for me and they said that they can put a request for my interest rate to go down if I maintained my payments. I told them I have maintained my payments for years and they said it would have to start from now. I told them I will be changing credit cards though I have not yet.
Pamela of Vail CO (04/10/07)Miles Redemption. They overhauled their travel redemption program without fully informing customers. It now takes double miles to redeem for a plane ticket. In their literature that was sent, they brag about no expiration dates for miles, and no maximum amount you can earn per year. It does not mention that they doubled the amount of miles needed.
I was registered at their web site and would check periodically. I had trouble logging on. I finally called them, and they said that yes we changed all the log in names and you will have to re-register. Another way we were blocked from getting the proper information about their rewards program. They are very secretive and deception about their program. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!
I had 177,207 miles in their program. My husband and I had mentally planned several trips with those miles. Our economic loss is $1700.
Leigh of Newbury Park CA (04/09/07)Capital One Credit Card Company has paid zero attention to items of dispute that I have filed. Has never contacted me, in any way....I have fraudulent transactions happening, I even close the accounts and they continue to allow fraudulent charges, and issues me new cards (where I instructed them...DO NOT ISSUE NEW CARDS), where more fraudulent charges occur. they have put me in collections....I keep repeating my story over, and over...NO ONE DOES ANYTHING TO CORRECT THE SITUATION. I am really at my wits end!!!! The situation has been playing out for over one year!!! They are ruining my credit - i am being harassed by outside CC collection agencies, who do not care.......
Beverly of Fontana CA (04/07/07)
Lowes decided to change the banking institution which holds their credit card from Capital One to GE Money Bank. We sent our March payment on time, which was cashed on time. To our surprise GE Money Bank called us looking for our March payment. Apparently Capital One has withheld our payment, did not post our payment to our account. Now our account is past due.
Tracy of Atlanta GA (04/06/07)
Capital one did not report my monthly payment for the months of Jan, Feb, and March. Therefore, my credit account shows a high debt to credit ratio. In addition, this causes my credit score to remain the same and does not increase. When I spoke with a rep, he stated that the company only reported the payment when it made a difference in the account.
I called back a week later and spoke to a supervisor named Isaac and he stated that the company reports every 30 days and he would send an inquiry to the recovery dept to find out why my monthly payments have not been posted for 3 months. To add insult to injury, they have a hold on my account, although I have paid the balance in full.
Jacquie of Long Beach CA (04/0 I wanted to keep the card, but only IF I could have reached the main corporate office to re-negotiate my (hard earned) interest rate they gave 3-4 yrs. ago. I guess I'm going to have to cancel the card...and find another card.
Richard of West Covina CA (03/27/07)
I received a special offer from Capital One for a balance transfer at a fixed rate of 1.99% APR until the balance was paid off. On April 14, 2005 Capital One paid off my Chase account of $5320.17. The APR never changed until Jan 2007. On Jan 03, 2007 I sent a certified letter requesting an explanation on how they could justify increasing my fixed APR. I have never received a response from Capital One. On 2/28/07 I talked to an account specialist and she said it would be fixed in a week, but nothing has changed.
Jay of Walnut Creek CA (03/27/07)
I had a card for approximately 3 years. In August of 07 I decided to cancel my card and called Capital One. I asked to completely pay down my balance and to close my account and cancel my card. The phone rep indicated that I may receive another bill with some additional pro-rated charges but that my balance was paid and that my card would be canceled. A couple of months later I was amazed to see that my account was still open and card still active. Needless to say there was an unpaid and late balance.
Capital One claims that I had agreed to a credit reporting service - Credit Inform - and that as long as that service was open then, "I'm sorry but we're unable to cancel your account." First, I had never agreed to receive any credit reporting service. I had never received anything from them either. When I called the rep from Capital One he told me I would have to call Credit Inform myself to cancel their services, then I would be allowed to close the credit card. I refused to do it...I would be canceling a service to which I had never agreed. I owe them all the back charges and payments and late fees, now over $300.00. My credit rating has taken an enormous hit.
Marvallene of Warsaw IN (03/26/07)My husband has been in failing health since 2002. He has been placed in a nursing home. He has mental problems and can't handle finances although he tried to. He got a Credit card from Capital One in June of 2005. I didn't know this until I got my credit report Oct. 2006. My name had been placed on the card as a debtor. I called them about it and they placed the card in Fraud Dept. Dec. 30th.,2006 He received a letter saying that he was the responsible party and they would make an adjustment on the next billing. Feb. 16th, 2007 he filed Bankruptcy as he couldn't pay bills. He is on Social Security.
Capital One sent a new statement with a new account # listing us both on it. Before long they sent another statement with the new account # ; took his name off the bill and had mine on it. I have fought it with everything I can think of. I am not responsible for this debt. What they did is Fraud on their part.
I can't sleep at night. I have nightmares of losing my home. I am so depressed I gained 40# in one year. This thing has obsessed my mind so that I can't think of anything else.
Theresa of Mcdonough GA (03/24/07)
I've had my Capital One credit card for about 5 years and had made a few sporadic payments just a few days past the due date. They jacked my APR to 29.2% a few months ago. I have been having some financial difficulties and was late again. They began calling me only 1 day after the due date. I made an online pmt of $128, which made my account current. After I made my payment, Lisa called. I told her I'd just paid $128 online, but she said I had to pay $327 to bring my account current. I told her no, the $128 was the Feb. payment and I just paid it so the next payment of $199 was due 3/19. She would not accept that and insisted that I owed them $327 right now. I told her that I'd need to set up payment arrangements then.
I agreed to allow $133 to be debited from my checking account on 3/19, 4/2, and 4/19. The next day, I came home to 2 messages from Capital One. Later that evening, Angela called demanding payment. I told her I spoke to Lisa yesterday and I paid $128 and set up payment arrangements. She said the $128 payment broke those arrangements. I told her to cancel the arrangement, and that I'd pay the $199 online by the due date of 3/19/07.
Then, as I was reviewing my bank account online on 3/22/07, I noticed that I was overdrawn. Capital One had debited my account for the $133.00! Now I have overdrawn a checking account causing $70.00 in overdraft fees and stress from repeated harassing telephone calls.
Lisa of Denville NJ (03/21/07)My ex-husband opened an account in my name online. Capital One has on signature on file that this is my account. They refuse to remove this loss from my credit report, even though they can't prove that I opened the account. They can press charges against my ex-husband if they wish, but this was never my account.
My credit report has suffered severely & I have been denied credit because of it & I am paying higher interest rates because of it.
Colleen of Seattle WA (03/21/07)I was originally approved for $25,000 (25K) healthcare financing. The financing says it is good for 90 days. Within less than 30 days, I used up $11,000 to pay off one doctor and would use the rest (30 days later) to pay the other doctor. I specificially told the representative that there would be two doctors involved. When I was getting ready to finalize the payment for the second doctor, they said that I would have to refinance and reapply again. I told them that there have been some reported items on my credit that were not mine and that I was disputing them. I, was then not approved because of this...
Although, the financing was supposedly still good for 90 DAYS!!! I could not believe what was happening. I made sure to schedule the surgeries all within 90 days. I was not approved! I called all the way up to the assistant to the CEO Greg Gilliam. He was awful and LIED about not having the proper paperwork on file... I HAVE A COPY!!!
My daughter is not able to get her much needed surgery! This has a profound impact on my family. I can't believe they would do this.
Adriana of Charlotte NC (03/20/07)I have been charged late fees, overlimit, etc. Just name it. When I call to close my account, and ask for a final settlement they agreed to settle for the amount of 432.13. For my surprise, they took that amount as a partial payment even if we agreed as a final payment and the check I sent specified final payment.
Mary of Powell TN (03/19/07)
I signed up for a card after I got a call solicited by Capitol One offering 4.9% for life of the card. In March/April the balance was accumulated at a rate increase of 9.9% which I was unaware of. I called the service number and got a myriad of press this automated button one after another. I finally hit the close the account button and got a real person.
I was told the rate change was complete and I would have to pay the amount of the interest rate. When reading my entire statement from front to back I finally found the 9.9% change in very small letters on the very last page of the stuff that comes after the advertisements and all. Very fine print.
Michael of Jenison MI (03/19/07)My wife recently discovered a rate increase with our monthly statement raising us from 7.9% to 19.9%....if we miss a payment it could be raised to prime rate + 19.9...so we're looking at the possibility of 28.15%, despite having a pretty good history of paying on time and being a customer for over five years. When I called to negotiate this down, the senior level account rep told me she had no alternative offers. When told several times this rate was unacceptable, she could only repeatedly say, I can understand why you feel that way. Nearly 20%...to over 28%? Honestly...how can these scumbags work for Cap One and live with themselves? Predatory lending at it's finest. Makes their TV ads a joke...What's in your wallet? We have to get them out of ours ASAP.
Katherine of Austin TX (03/17/07)I filed a dispute against a vendor because they a) processed an amount on my card that I did not authorize or approve b) did not provide the goods and services that was contracted. I provide the contract and explained everything in writing to Capital One. To top it off, in his rebutal the vendor admits that he did not provide the goods/services that was contracted and provides excuses for not providing them. They ADMIT to not providing the goods but capital one does not honor the dispute and says they cannot do anything that I have to pay the amount. Further and more infuriating, their letters claim that my dispute was in reference to a hotel stay and it's not. They claimed that I stayed the entire time -- this dispute is NOT about a stay. Further, they claim that the vendor is not obligated to accept a refund request -- this is not a refund request, this is a dispute because I did not received the goods I thought I was going to pay. Because the letters sent by Capital One and countless conversations with Capital one reps whereby they have LIED about information, I believe that Capital One has no intention of protecting it's card holders. They do not investigate disputes and send out standard letters to cover themselves as the deny the disputes filed. Neither the vendor or Capital One are willing to credit me for goods that I did not recieve and/or funds charged to my account that I did not approve.
Capital One has reported me to the credit burreaus, it has affected my credit rating, I've spent hours on the phone with Capital One (lost days) - where they have hung up the phone, transfereed me and I cannot get any assistance.
Brandi of Merced CA (03/16/07)
An online transaction made my account go over limit by twenty-three cents. I immediately went to my Capital One account online and transferred a payment of $20.00 to the account. Not only did I get a $35.00 over limit fee, but my APR was raised from nine to NINETEEN percent! I called to complain and get the amount adjusted and they were of absolutely no help whatsoever.
Robbie of San Diego CA (03/16/07)
I've have two cards with Capitol One. A VISA and MasterCard, both cards have payment protection. In July '05 to October '06 I was out of work and submitted all required paperwork to activate my Payment Protection. I even made a couple of extra payments to be certain that I didn't fall behind. However, I have spent enumerable hours on the phone with Capitol One Customer Care explaining to them that my account should have never been charged over the limit fees, or late fees because I have Payment Protection. (Which started two months late).
Now my VISA account has been sent to collections and is affecting my credit rating. The protection plan is NO protection especially when it doesn't protect you from the company that supposedly issued it in the first place.
Sheree of Warren MA (03/15/07)
In December of 2006 I made a payment of $325.00 to Capital One. Later in the month I received information that my account was past due and that I needed to pay over $500.00 to keep the account in good standing. I made a payment but was not able to hunt down what had happened until 1/2/07.
At this time I received a monthly statement for a business account that had been closed previously. On it was shown a $350.00 credit and a zero balance. I called Capital One and it took many calls and a couple of hours for them to determine that for some reason they had posted the money I had sent to this other account. I asked them to close that account and they said they would take the extra payment and put it toward my other account.
Currently Capital One is stating that I am again late and that I must pay them February's bill and March's to get back into good standing. They have also bumped my rate to 19%. I spent almost 2 hours on the phone this evening with 3 different people who all indicated that Capital One requires a minimum payment and it is not their fault that I sent in more money than I was required to in January. They also posted the money that they messed up for the previous month (12/06). I told them that I was unwilling to make a payment until they refunded the original $325.00 and that as soon as I got this money I would pay them Feb & March's bills.
Dewey of Lancaster OH (03/15/07)
When I called to get a credit limit increase I was turned down, but was given another card. Soon after that they said my payments started being late, although I sent them at the same time. When I started to call in payments they would block the phone line so I couldn’t make a payment, yet I would call and enter my other account that was not due and the call would go through. They have ruined my credit!
Ajay of Dudley MA (03/15/07)
I do not have an account, or ever applied for one, with Capital One, but they ran a report on my credit score 31 times in the past 2 years! Each time a credit check is made, my credit score went down 2 points! I really don't appreciate this.
Branka of Spokane WA (03/14/07)
I have paid my balance off and then charged $57.75. I went online the next day to find out that they charged me $40.00 in interest. I called and one of their reps told me that she will take care of it, the system is automated and it made a mistake, etc. 15 days passed and the balance was still there. I called back only this time to be talked back to and hung up on two times. I wrote a letter to them two days ago and still nothing.
Debra of Erie PA (03/14/07)
My son, who was still in high school, received at least 4-6 credit card offers a week (all pre-approved). Capital One issued (2) separate credit cards to him without him even having a job. When I realized what was going on, I tried making the payments for him, until I made a payment a week before it was due and they claimed it was received the day after it was due and so they charged both a late fee and an over the limit fee. Since I had paid using bank money orders, I requested copies and found that they had marked the front of the money order with his account number and the date received which was, in fact, the due date.
When this was brought to their attention, we were told we should have sent it out even earlier to avoid this situation. Once they start adding all these extra fees, it makes it impossible to ever catch up. I think it's distressing that credit card companies can prey on young adults like this. Between these (2) cards and another one from Chase Bank, they've added so many fees that we'll never be able to get our heads above water.
Laurie of Longmeadow MA (03/14/07)
I opened a Capital One credit card account prior to a trip to Mexico since they don't charge a currency transaction fee. We have had credit cards for over 40 years with no upper limits for our gold Amex card to $30,000 for others. Capital One issued a limit of only $2,000. After only several hundred dollars worth of charges in Mexico, Capital One denied any additional charges. I tried to access my account on line with all the correct passwords etc. to no avail. I paid the account $1,500.00 to cover any unknown problem.
Checking with my bank, the check was processed by Capital One, however, it made no difference in our ability to use the card. Upon our return, our three weeks worth of mail contained no statement from Capital One. After speaking to several people in their customer service center, I discovered that our account had been placed in the fraud department.
The customer service rep then informed me that it was MY responsibility to have informed them that we would be in Mexico, even though we had never been informed of this policy and have never needed to inform any Visa, Master Card or Amex accounts we have used in over 40 years of our intent to travel. The customer rep then hung up on me after telling me that it was "all my fault".
Dennis of Brockport, PA (03/13/07)I lost my job without notice. Immediately I contacted all my credit card accounts. Each and every one worked with me and I have had no problems with them, except Capital One. They refused to work with me. My credit is good except for this account.
Kathy of Newton, MA (03/13/07)I opened a Capital One MasterCard credit card account in June 2002 with a fixed 7.9% interest rate that will "never go up as long as account remains in good standing". I confirmed this with a customer service rep at the time. My account has remained in good standing. I have never been late with a payment or gone over the credit limit. So I was very surprised to find a notice in last month's bill that my interest rate would be increasing to 12.9%. When I called Capital One about it, the customer service rep admitted that my account has the notation '7.9% fixed rate for life' but that it was in the 'fine print' that the rate could go up.
Robertof Springtown TX (03/13/07)I signed up for payment protection and credit reporting through capitol one. They did not inform me that it was with another company. When I canceled the card they did not tell me I had to contact these companies to cancel the two accounts. They did not bill me till the bill got to about 125 dollars, they then called for an overdue payment. They let these charges build up when they knew I had no use for them since I no longer had the credit card. They refused to cancel the charges.
Dean of East Rutherford NJ (03/13/07)I am an eight year credit card customer of Capital One, and had a fixed interest rate of 7.9% during that time. I just received a letter that Capital One is raising my rate to 12.9%. My account has been in good standing, never a late payment, almost always paid in full. I have charged over $100,000 over the past eight years. The only reason I was given for the change is that it was a corporate decision. Capital One does offer cards with a fixed rate of 9.9% for new customers only. They are not willing to help existing customers with maintaining their existing rates. They would rather lose a long-standing excellent customer rather than work with them to maintain their business. In my opinion, this is a very bad business practice, and will drive existing customers away.
Melissa of Canton OH (03/12/07)I had obtained a Capital One credit card. Shortly, there after I started receiving harassing phone calls from Capital One and very shortly there after starting. I was told I had an overdue credit card payment due that must be paid immediately. My parents paid the balance in full to get rid of them. Unknown to us, the money was paid on a fraudulent account. For the last year and a half we have been battling with Capital one to move the payment and deal with not only one but two other fraudulent accounts.
Magnolia of Waggaman LA (03/11/07)We refinance our 2006 Chrysler Pacifica, with E-loan a week ago.We found out by calling Capital one auto finance on Saturday 10,2007. They lied to E-Loan about our pay-off qoute, they said it was $12,045.00.We know it was more than that, when I called Capital one, they said, we owed $4,000.00 and they will start back collecting $317.00 on June 10,2007 until it is paid in full. They lied to E-Loan and to us.I keep thinking, what if I wouldn't have called. They would have been going in our account taking money out that wasn't theirs. We will start paying E-Loan soon,we have proof that they said it to E-Loan.Please help us or point us in the right direction. Thank you & God bless you!
They are trying to collect interest from us also.
Joan of Tullahoma, TN (03/11/07)According to Capital One my payment was one day late so I was charged a $35 late fee. I have been a Capital One customer for several years and always pay more than the minimum payment so I was not happy with the fee but maybe it was my fault. At the top of the bill it said this can happen to anyone. In the middle of the page I was informed that I would now be charged their Default APR, if I did not decline their terms and cancel my credit card. My card was cancelled on 3-10-07. The Lord does move in mysterious ways. Capital One is helping me to get out of debt faster!!!
Shannon of Las Vegas NV (03/08/07)For six months, I have been repeatedly called and harassed by collectors working for Capital One Auto Financing attempting to collect on someone else’s account. I have repeatedly informed the collectors that I am not the person they are calling for and that this is the wrong phone number. In addition to calling me a liar, yelling at me, laughing at me, threatening to come over to my house, these collectors are also disclosing confidential information about the actual debtors. They have told me their names, address, and the make, model, and year of the car they threatened to repossess.
Richard B. of Los Angeles CA (03/08/07)I called to settle a late payment, today 030707. They said they would process it and wave the next months late fee. I received a call just 20min later by another rep stating that they will not wave the fee and they where going to charge my account for 29.00. nyway $21. Then I receive a bill for about $52 minimum. So I pay it. the next month I receive a bill that states I have late charges that I need to pay because I didn't include the normal monthly payment (52 + 21).
David of Highland CA (03/07/07)We had a funding company cut a check in the amount of $4,285.00 to Capitol One to pay off the balance of the check. Capitol One processed the check as $1,285.00. When I called to straighten this out I was told I had to get in touch with th3 bank that the check was written on and get a reference number so Capitol one could correct this.
Brian of North Wildwood NJ (03/07/07)
I've had a long relationship with them (5 years) and always have paid in full every month. They've attempted to negate my rewards points. Claimed false late fees and done just about every ridiculous thing in the book. Then when I review their supposed "loan" requirements I notice that it's now saying you've had a business card with at LEAST a 5,000 limit...they have my limit set at 3500 but yet I've done over 60,000 in business with them and another 30 through their auto loans.
I'm sorry all the stupid P.R. Commercials in the world with big bank reps and Vikings won't change a SINGLE thing. Capital One Doesn't know it's true paying customer base from their latest stock option sheet where they issued themselves more blank checks on the backs of American business and taxpayers.
Jeff of Buckley WA (03/06/07)i have tried for two days to close my account each day i sat on hold for over an hour each time the first day after waitnig for for an hour i hung up and called back later talked to an actual person then was transfered to another department just to find out that they were closed, the second day was the same situation but i ended the call before i was to be transfered again because the gentleman told me that the department would be closing in 10 minutes.
i am trying to refinance my home the lender is going to pay off my credit card bill but i would like the account closed so that i do not damage my credit, as i have worked very hard in the last 8 months to repair it
Paula of Marysville CA (03/01/07)I had a $4,000 loan in 2001. I Had emergency surgery in September of 2004. I was on disability for 2 months. Could not pay. The attorney made arrangements to pay when back to work. I was told instead of paying $105.00 a month, I could just pay half, about $50.00 a month. I owed $800.00 only. In between getting better in two months from Sept to November I was harassed daily up to 7 times a day even on weekends about the money. They would call at 6 a.m. PST until after 9:30 at night. I am now on Credit Foundation Consumer Debt Program. All bills including the 3 Capital One credit cards i have on the list. I paid off one Capital One credit card last year and still making payments on the other two at $30.00 a month each. For the loan payments, I was yelled at, screamed at, cussed at, Capital One made calls to my job. I wrote them to please do not call my job and they continued. The Lawyer called last month to say Cap One is suing me. I called the Lawyers (Winn & Sims in Fullerton, CA) i don't want to go to court. They refused to cooperate. I get a letter a week or two more and says that we can solve this problem.. I was informed I owe from $800.00 now over $3,700.00 from 'fees' over the last two years and court costs. I had a bonus, which I sent them in a cashier's check of $1,000.00. I am now to pay $175.00 per month till this is paid off. This was originally a $4,000.00 loan. I only owed $800.00. Cap One will not give me information on all the payments I made automatically over the years. So now I'm stuck paying $175.00 a month and.
Sheryl of Westfield IN (02/28/07)I opened one of the mailings that said my account was changing. In the letter I found a statement that included a bill for payment protection and there was a number to call beside the company that was billing me. I called the number. Apparently Capitol One gave my credit card number to some payment protection company and they have been billing me for a service that I did not purchase. I have never signed any contract with the company, which I found out was named Stonebridge out of Plano, Texas. I spoke with a lady at the number beside the payment protection listing on my statement. I told her I didn't by any payment protection and she wanted to know if I knew what it was, I told her I didn't, she then explained it to me. I told her that I would never buy anything like that and that I wanted my money back from them. She told me that she was only authorized to credit back two months and that I would have to write Stonebridge in Plano Texas. This has caused me economic damage as I've been billed for approximately 7 years at $29 something a month for a product that I have not purchased. Along with what they billed me, Capitol One of course tacks on interest.
Andamo of Seattle WA (02/26/07)I opened a direct money market savings account and setup the auto transfer for the 20th of the month. When they took the transfer I went to verify it on line and the account was gone. When I called they said it has gone past the 30 days since I opened it. They had to wait 10 business days before I would see the money again or before I could remove it.
They have my money sitting in a Capital One savings account earning cash while my money was suppose to be earning me cash.
Janet of Winthrop Harbor IL (02/18/07)
Every month we mail our payment on time to Capital One. (At least 10 days prior to due date). Every month they state that they have not received the payment until 3 - 5 days after the due date. In turn they have taken an APR of 6.99% and jumped it to 29.99%. We have a rather hefty balance with them (20k) and that interest is destroying us.
We tried to prove to Capital One that we made the payments on time. When we went to our banks web site to view the check images we realized that Capital One changes the check type to an ACH withdrawal and destroys the check. They are making us pay too much in interest and it’s causing family problems because the bill has increased above the line of credit.
Barbara of Escalon CA (02/18/07)
I have an account with Capitol One. At first there was no interest, and then they started making it totally impossible to pay them off. I pay my bill online on the 3rd. of each month (It's due on the 6th). I usually pay up to double the about owed but always more than is required. I pay on time and they still add late pays, over the limit charges and high interest. It is totally impossible to pay this bill off or even pay it down because it’s like my payments mean nothing at all. They do not count my payments until the following month.
This is so ridiculous that I can't get a payment to even count. Economic damage is devastating since I am a senior citizen living on Social Security. I have some auto repairs that need to be done but I can't get my card down no matter how much I pay.
Pamela of Estero FL (02/03/07)
I called Capital One to increase my credit limit and was denied the limit increase, but qualified for a new card. I never activated the new card. A few months later I pulled my credit report. Capital One was reporting me for failing to pay a membership fee (under $20.00).
I received a letter in the mail from Capital One saying they made a mistake; there is an annual membership fee on the account. I called Capital One, I paid the "Past Due" member fee plus interest and the associate combined this account with one of my existing accounts (remember, this is what I wanted from the start...to have my credit line increased. But, this cost me another member fee and a red mark on my credit report.
Over the next several months I spoke with Capital One associates and was assured over and over that the item would be removed from my credit report. I contacted the credit bureau and was told the item was verified as accurate. It is still on my credit report! I never activated this account and I have two other accounts with Capital One, both in good standing. Now my credit is being harmed.
Mary of Keene NH (01/30/07)
I received a Capital One credit card in 1998. I had several times when I received my statement 2 days before it was due. Making me have to pay over the phone in order to avoid their RIDICULOUS late fees. In 2003 I was having a hard time keeping up w/ payments. I called Capital One to close my account and was told it would be taken care of, but I still needed to pay the balance. I agreed. However, on my next statement I was shocked to have found that I had gone over my limit (due to them charging me the annual fee). There should have been NO charge. The card was canceled and cut up.
Now there was an "over limit" fee and a "late fee". I called and spoke to someone who told me they could NOT take the fees away. They told me I had to pay the balance in full. I explained I could not do that. I asked for a payment plan, and was told they don't "do" payment plans.
I then asked her to put in writing that I had offered to pay off my debt but had to make payments and they were refusing the payment I was able to do. I never heard from them. They reported me to the credit bureaus as I had expected. What I didn't expect.....was that they have added fee's EVERY MONTH for 3 years. They have added almost $2,000 to the original bill and have reported that I owe them in excess of $4,000 to what was originally a $2,000 card.
Philip of Crowley TX (01/27/07)
I had an auto loan through Capital One where every payment was made via automatic draft. At the end of the loan, I assumed the balance was paid in full. Several days after the 48th (final) payment, I began receiving phone calls from Capital One's debt collections department telling me my account was overdue. No one at Capital One could offer an explanation why.
I spoke with personnel from debt collections and customer service but no one had a reason why I was being called. I was told the numbers are dialed automatically and that this could be not be changed. Capital One is threatening to take back my car and hurt my credit if I don't pay the $61.84.
Corinne of Ann Arbor MI (01/20/07)I have had a Capital One low amount Visa since about 2003. The payments I send are usually much more than the minimum- but if the bill is due in two days, even if I have sent say 200. when all that is due is 30, I still get a late fee. I would like to send them a moneygram today but can't get in touch with anything but a robot- the robots can't answer any real questions for me like how I can wire a payment by giving me a routing number etc. It is as if the whole thing is set up so we will continue to be late and pay extra fines. I plan to pay it off and not charge anymore and see what happens.
I feel worried all the time. I am a good bill payer but not with them- I want to be able to talk to people when I have a question for free on a 1-800 number like all the other businesses
David of Ann Arbor, MI (01/12/07)Long, but worth the read:In January of 2005, I noticed a charge on my Capital One statement from a credit protection offer that I had declined when I first applied for the credit card. I tried several times to contact the company that provided the service, but I was unsuccessful in canceling. No problem, I thought, I'll just tell C1 to deny the charges.Unfortunately, their response was that I needed to deal with the company myself and get documents in writing from the credit protection company that they were refusing to cancel the service. Why on earth would a company, that refuses to cancel an account, send documentation stating such? Well, they clearly wouldn't!C1 told me that they could NOT just deny charges because I requested it. I'd never heard of such an absurd policy, and immediately requested the credit card account be closed. I also paid the entire balance of the card at that time so that I owed C1 absolutely nothing. They told me the account was successfully closed, and I went on my merry way. Fast forward four months and one (yes, one) statement later, and it turns out that the account was never cancelled. Seems C1 has a policy of REOPENING an account if anyone tries to charge anything within 30 days of account closure. The charges that reopened the account? My annual Capital One fee!I paid the fee and the additional late fees that had accumulated as a result of not having received a statement until May. At that time, I requested that ALL charges be denied, and that the card be closed immediately without possibility of reopening. I confirmed repeatedly that the account was closed forever. Fast forward another four months and one statement (notice a pattern?), and suddenly I have a balance of $1200!! The card itself only had a limit of $1000, so a lot of that was alleged overage fees. To date, I still have no reasonable explanation for the balance. I've walked through the charges that were made to the card between May and September (all of which should have been denied because the account was closed), and the total was in the vicinity of $200. The charges came from the original credit protection company and Capital One's late/overage fees. This is where it gets even more confusing (not to mention shady and illegal). When I started questioning the high balance (I had a zero balance in May) the customer service rep. suddenly changed the story and claimed that I had a balance of $750 when I requested the account closure in May. Naturally I asked where the balance came from, and how the accumulation of charges totaling $200 had been added to $750 to give an end result of $1200. The dumbfounding response was that she did not have records available prior to six months ago, and that because of the high balance, interest over the summer had accumulated to make up the other mysterious $250. I once again requested that the account be closed and that I be immediately sent documentation on every charge to the account. She refused my request and told me to call the customer service number (which I had called to talk to someone in the first place). It is now January, and the account is STILL OPEN. I have not made a single payment to it since May (8 months ago), and they keep adding on overage and late fees and destroying my credit. There's no way I can possibly consider paying them while the account is still open because they'll just keep it open and start all over again after pocketing my ever growing due payment. They refuse to close the account, they refuse to deny charges, they don't even seem to want to write off the account and throw it all to debt collection... I have no idea what to do.
Mike of Los Angeles, CA (01/11/07)I am trying to refinance my house. When a credit report was pulled I found out that Captal One had reported me to all of the creit bureaus as delinquent. I was told by Capital one that we are delinquent if the payment is one day late. I don't believe that. After 6 years with them at 19.90% intrest and always paying early, they reported me. I called to talk to them and at first I could not even talk to a human. After pressing 0 many times I was finaly transfered. The people were rude and I was even hung up on 2 different times. My wife called first and they made her cry.

I had (3) small credit cards from Capitol One for several years. I didn't use the cards anymore so I destroyed the cards by fire. Then waiting a month called to get the balances and paid them off over the phone. Shortly after that I called their payment protection insurers to cancel them.
In October 2006 they sent me a bill for $29.00 annual fee. I immediately called customer service to complain. They were nice and said there must have been a mistake so they would go ahead and credit back the $29.00, but that there was a 25-cent balance left over and wanted to know how I would pay it. I said I wasn't going to pay anything since I had already cancelled the cards to begin with. She said I would have to pay it before they could re-cancel the card. Since then they have charged me $29.00 plus interest each month. The bill on a card I don't even have is $90.30 as of Jan 06, 2007. All because I wouldn't give them a quarter they said I owed. What can I do?
Sara of La Grange, IL (12/10/06)Capital one charges you over $10 to pay by phone using one of their human customer service people. They also put a payment due date on your statement that might be a Sunday, so that when you call to pay you're late b/c the payment won't post until the following day. They say the rule is stated on the statement. It took me 5 minutes of reading the fine print to find that. That's how they get you, put it in fine print and you agree to it.
Dave of Hayward WI (12/06/06)I have a Capital One account. I just recently started having problems with Capital One. Capital One has accepted my online payments for November and December. I have paid them before the due date. I check my bank account and keep finding the payment has not been taken out of my account. About 5 days layer on the Capital One website when I check my acocunt it shows the payment has been returned. I have had more than enough money in my account and there is no reason the money couldn't be drawn. I have tried contacting Capital One to no avail. Try their customer service number and all you get is a canned menu.
Today I had my bank check and they say Capital One never attempted to drawn the money. Intesting enough my APR on my account is now over $28+%. I haven't been using the account and only paying it off. Capital One is now fraudently adding charges to my account which are criminal. I paid more than the amount due each month. Apparently they want to generate revenue from my account and just the regular interest wasn't enough. My wife works at the post office and she is hearing similar stories from her customers. Please investigate what they are doing to consumers. I don't know what to do. They won't answer their consumer line and they won't answer their emails. They are loan sharks who need stopped.
Kelly of Rochester NY (12/06/06)My father, who is 63 years old, has always taught me that there is great responsibility involved with credit. Leading by example, he was never late to pay a bill in his entire life. He never had any issues with credit, that is... until he tried to consolidate with Capital One. After receiving an offer in the mail for a low-interest consolidation loan, my dad applied via telephone to consolidate 5 separate balances. The customer service rep informed him that he would receive his information by mail. A little over 2 months had passed, and he received nothing. Also, one of the loans he had consolidated had not shown a payment.
Finally, he received a letter in the mail that said his account was past due, he would have to pay several fees, and his name was being sent to the credit bureau. THE CREDIT BUREAU!!! This was my father's worst nightmare considering the lifetime he had put into establishing good credit. He called the number on the letter, and attempted to explain the fact that he had not received any statement. He then asked what address they had on file. The customer service rep said that he did not see an address. My dad then gave his address, and asked for a statement to be sent. After hearing the full account of his situation, I attempted to make calls as well. The customer service people were not identifiable by names... they used identification numbers. You could not call by extensions, and they did not have a fax available to send statements right away. I would have to wait 3-5 days.

Well I agree since I work for North Fork Bank I have heard these testimonies in person. Plenty of people are not really happy with North fork bank turning into capital bank because of there previous experiences. Some people reacted by closing there accounts
